Farewell (for now) to a local entity

Wow was the only thing in the email subject line.

It was an email from an acquaintance telling me that a local blog, Friends for Fullerton’s Future, was turning off-for now.

I nearly fell out of my chair reading it. REALLY?!

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, the Friends blog, as it has become locally nicknamed, has been around almost 5 years and came to fame almost 2 years ago after the death of Kelly Thomas, a homeless, mentally ill man who was allegedly murdered by Fullerton police officers. I personally believe that the persistent work of Tony Bushala, the blog founder, and Travis Kiger, led to charges being filed against 3 of the police officers on scene that evening.

I haven’t always agreed with the work on that blog. They were rude as hell, committed copyright infringement more times than I can count and on and on.

They were also instrumental in holding local politicians accountable and put many media outlets around the country to shame by bringing the Thomas case to light when they published a bruised, heavily beat up face of Thomas as he laid brain dead in his hospital bed.

They were clever as hell on occasion also. I especially loved the video Bushala did when Dick Jones, the mayor at the time Thomas died, told the crowd at a city council meeting in his trademark Southern accent, “WILL YOU SHUT UP?!”

Bushala mixed a video of Jones saying that at the city council meeting mixed in with The Black Eyed Peas video Shut Up. It was priceless. It was creative. The Black Eyed Peas might not have appreciated it, but it worked…

So, as you can see, this was a mixed bag.

Any way you look at it though, I wish the blog admins well as they go on to the next chapter of their lives. You leave a gaping hole in this unique city’s structure.

Spring is coming

So I’ve got these trees in front of my place. One shed all its leaves last month. The other is blooming pretty. Spring is coming!

My neighbor tells me these trees provide shade, but they also provide something else for me. They color my life.  Especially now. In Spring.

Spring is such a wonderful time of year. The sun is shining. The skies are blue. All is well.

I like Spring. I like my trees. :)

Blue skies ahead….

I’ve been looking up at the sky a lot lately. It’s for personal reasons as well as admiration.

God’s wonders never cease to amaze.

Kinky f*ckery

I’m not ashamed to admit it. I learned a new word this past week-and these books are to blame…

fiftyshades

Ah yes, the Fifty Shades series. Millions of women (and some men) are perusing the pages of these books. The New York Times bestseller list can vouch for that one. I’ve just added to E.L. James’s millions by getting book 1 on sale at the store. (Don’t judge-it was on sale!)

I almost didn’t care to read these books. A friend of mine from college made the point that here we women bitch about men watching porn and reading Playboy.

And then, we watch Magic Mike and read Fifty Shades of Grey…. A little bit of hypocrisy, methinks?

Nahhhhh…. :) I haven’t seen the movie… And the books are pretty tame stuff……

Helping others as best you can

I got to thinking about this recently when someone told me she’d like her younger family member to volunteer somewhere to develop empathy for those less fortunate than himself. Is it ingrained in us to help others? Or do we do it because we feel forced?

Helping others out can include many different things. Sometimes it can be a shoulder to cry on, chatting with someone on Facebook, or getting groceries for someone when they’re sick. Helping others can be as simple as asking how a person is doing. It can also simply mean being there…..

I know that I personally am happy to help a person out if my schedule permits and if other things permit me to do so. Within reason. I do say no though. Quite often lately. :) I think I do this because I grew up in a home where I saw my parents helping my grandparents out as they aged. Other family members were also willingly helped. It wasn’t a burden. It simply was.

Let me ask you this. What do you do to help others in need? Do you feel burdened to do so, or is it a joy for you to be able to do so? Leave a comment and let us know.

Happy New Year!

yeardate2013

I usually love the start of a new year. It’s always full of promise of what lies ahead. The past is gone. The present has arrived. We start anew.

Starting anew also means having a focus, a goal in mind. A positive mantra of sorts. Ali Edwards  does a great job extolling others to this effort, which I’ve joined these past few years. This year, I choose the word:

I’m not talking about getting this year for material purposes. I’m talking about living life. I want to get fully involved in my life. I want to get some positive career experiences that I will always remember. I want to get healthier this year also. Small stuff. ;)

I wish you all a positive, life affirming new year filled with joy, peace and dreams fulfilled!

Thanksgiving dishes I get to cook

I must be a grown up, because I get to cook some dishes this year for the family Thanksgiving dinner! ;) My assigned dishes? Stuffing with a side of mini apple pies! ;)

My first thought after being assigned to bring pumpkin pie was to simply do what millions of red blooded Americans do each year-hit Marie Callender’s. As a friend said, “By the pie, tell a lie!” But then, I looked again on Pinterest and found this:

Aren’t they cute???

We’ll see if I’m up to the challenge of making both-or if I’m a red blooded American after all. ;)

What dishes are you making for Thanksgiving? Are you a red-blooded American, or nuts like me and making everything from scratch? :)

Weekly pinspiration…

Amen.

Have you?

Ahhh, election day….

Today in Southern California we have many different propositions to vote on, running the gamut from legalizing fireworks again in my city to the state-wide proposition to label food that has genetically modified ingredients in it.

This election is being called historic for many different reasons. Not only is there a possibility of electing the first LDS president, but also locally there could be many changes as well for those in my neck of the woods.

Whatever today may bring, I remember the blessing of being born in the United States. I am fortunate as a woman to be alive in a time where I have the right to vote. I consider it a privilege to exercise that right.

God Bless us today and every day in this great nation.

Weekly pinspiration

Halloween (and my birthday :) ) are coming up next week, so the Pinterest boards are filled with Halloween ideas. This one caught my eye due to how feasible-and pretty-it is.

Even though it’s a great idea, I think I’d only use this for a Halloween party and not for random trick or treaters. (I don’t even want to think of the scissor time cutting the bag fringe if I were to do this for the latter!) What a great favor bag at the end of the evening.

Has anyone else found Halloween ideas on Pinterest this year? If so, what are they?
